About CGPA Canada

Updated: Jan 1

CGPA Canada, the Institute of Chartered Global Practising Accountants of Canada, is a federally incorporated professional accounting association with the authority to credential, regulate, and govern its members nationwide. Since 2016, CGPA Canada has promoted excellence in public finance, taxation, advisory, and non‑statutory accounting services in Canada and internationally.

Recognized, Chartered, and Member-Regulatory

CGPA Canada is not a CPA regulator and does not license statutory audits, reviews, or assurance. Instead, it functions as a fully recognized professional association with regulatory authority over its members (CGPAs). Its credentials are legally protected under Section 2(d) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, affirming freedom of association.

As a regulatory body, CGPA Canada has the authority to:

  • Credential and license CGPA members

  • Establish professional and ethical standards

  • Monitor compliance

  • Enforce disciplinary action when required

This governance applies exclusively to CGPA members and non-statutory accounting practice, ensuring professional integrity while respecting statutory audit mandates of provincial CPA regulators.

Recognition and Legitimacy

CGPA Canada’s credibility is reinforced through multiple federal and institutional recognitions:

  • Federal incorporation under the Canada Not‑for‑profit Corporations Act

  • Recognition by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)

  • CRA approval for tuition tax credits

  • Listing in federal registries and exemption under Ministry of Education criteria
